Latics came from 1-0 down to defeat Garry Flitcroft's Leigh Genesis thanks to goals from Nick Meace and Daniel Redmond.

Watson's side found to it hard to get going in the first-half and when former Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers striker Matt Jansen put the home side ahead it was clear a big improvement was needed.

That's just what he got, with Jon Routledge taking charge of the midfield and Redmond eager to get on the ball and cause problems for the opposition.

Meace's back post header from a Joe Holt corner levelled the scoreline 15 minutes after the break, and Redmond's wonder-goal sealed the win. The midfielder picking up the ball on the edge of the area, skipping past three challenges and rounding the 'keeper to stroke home.

Redmond was a threat throughout the game, looking dangerous going forward, and linking up well with Routledge and Jonathan Breeze who were solid and industrious all night.

There was also the opportunity for new signing Abian Serrano to make an appearance, replacing Holt with 20 minutes left. The Spaniard did well on the right-wing showing a good first touch and lots of pace.

Latics: Nicholls; Morris, Buxton (Amos, 45), Langley (Meace, 45), Mustoe (Williams, 45); Redmond (Mayer, 68), Breeze, Routledge, Holt (Serrano, 68); McManaman, Kupisz (Chiocchi, 68)
Subs: Rugg, Lambert
